Soccer, Education and Change

improving skills and building confidence

Each day at camp we start out by learning and practicing a skill of the day. Then, we move on to learning foundational tactical concepts necessary for a successful soccer player. Finally, we finish each day with Ugandan Championships, where players are grouped into teams and challenged to compete with the new skills they’ve gained during the day.

Learning about Uganda

From the beginning, we wanted to share what we loved about Uganda with our campers. So each day during snack breaks, we pass around pictures and show videos of everything amazing Uganda has to offer: animals, waterfalls, markets, the landscape and people going about their daily lives. We’ve always hoped that through this exposure, our campers could gain an open mind to far away places and develop an appreciation and compassion for people no matter where they are from.

Water Day

On the fourth day of camp, we use the snack breaks to teach our campers about water access and water use in America and Uganda. We draw connections between our similarities and our differences and emphasize ways to be more conscious of our personal water use at home. We discuss how communities around the world are left without clean water due to factors outside of their control and the measures those communities take to keep themselves and their families safe.

making a difference

Finally, on the last day of camp, we sit with each camper and help them decide how they’d like to make a difference in their community. They write out their commitment and post it on the Make a Difference board so everyone can see each other’s ideas.
